Will it damage my hair?

Hi I'm 12 years old and my mom and I went to a hair cutting shop. My mom was going to have her hair cut (again.) While one of the people who works there is cutting my moms hair. I'm going through one of the styling books that shows what you can do with your hair. They all looked pretty good, some were kinda strange though...Anyway, I didn't see too many styles that you can do with my hair,(very frizzy and curly, and shoulder length and up.) The lady who was cutting my moms hair saw my face and said things about it blah blah blah. But then she said I should have my hair relaxed so it would be straight. She said, 'you're 12 and I think it's time to do something with that hair.' I was like wow-yay! Someone actually thinks I'm old enough to do this! My mom set a date to have my hair relaxed in August. The lady said it wouldn't damage my hair if it was done right. Is she hiding something? What else will it do to my hair?

Any chemical treatments that are done to the hair will damage it to a certain degree. It's good to trust your stylist when getting any chemical services, because beauticians will have a license and a certain amount of classroom hours before they can work on anyone's head. You have more choices than you think for wearing your hair even if it is super corse and curly. You might want to consider trying braids and twists as a natural alterantive to chemical staightening, however those methods can be costly. Many people relax their hair and as a stylist myself, I've always advised using good professional hair products (which your own hair dresser can recommend to you) to maintain the health of your hair and scalp. I'm sure whatever you decide will turn out alright as long as your mother is confident in her beautician. Good luck.

Just about anything you do to your hair can damage it... but relaxing can do wonders to your hair. If she has experience with your type of hair... and what i mean is... is she a black hairdresser or does have experience with your type of hair? I am being very serious about this... there are many hairdressers who will tell you they can do something but in reality they don't have the experience. So good luck and I hope you like your hair when its done... it will require upkeep to keep it straight... and hopefully she will go over all that with you and your mom.
